Shell Pakistan has made a significant contribution to Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT), which provides free eye care treatment including cornea replacement to over one million patients free of cost annually.
SPL annually sponsors a home for orphan children in the SOS Children’s Villages, and has recently sponsored an SOS Technical Centre for Auto-workshop training. In 2008, we have launched our Shell Scholarship programme with the HEC, for deserving students from underprivileged sectors of our society for degrees in Higher Education.
We continue to assist with the rehabilitation of the October 2005 Earthquake affectees and have built a Primary School in the remote village of Kalaban for 300 schoolchildren who were left without a school building in the aftermath of the calamity. Recently we partnered with The Citizens Foundation to establish three Shell Campuses in the earthquake-affected region of Battagram. The schools have recently been completed, and currently enrol 109 students from the community, of which almost forty percent are girls.
Our Shell Tameer Program, introduced in 2003, today exists as one of the foremost efforts to facilitate youth entrepreneurship in the country. Now in its sixth year of providing entrepreneurship guidance, Shell Tameer has engaged more than 45,000 young people through workshops, seminars, meetings and the company website. By the end of June 2009, more than 66 workshops had been conducted for 2,500 young people, and 57 seminars had provided awareness to over 12,000 students.
Shell Pakistan is also one of the first companies in our country to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. Breaking taboos to educate, we offer VCT services through our partners to disseminate education about HIV/AIDS, and to facilitate its prevention. Both these initiatives help us strengthen our fence-line communities, and help secure our business performance by offering free medical guidance to our hauliers and contractors.
